How to Get a Drivers License in Washington State

Getting a driver’s license in Washington State is an important milestone and a great responsibility. It’s also a process that can be a bit complicated. To make sure you get your license in a safe and legal way, follow these steps.

Check Eligibility

Before you start the process of getting your license, make sure you meet all of the requirements. To be eligible, you must:

  • Be at least 16 years old
  • Have permission from your parents if you’re under 18
  • Have proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, etc.)
  • Have a Social Security Number
  • Be able to pass a vision test
  • Be able to pass a written test

Enroll in a Driver Education Course

Taking a driver education course is one of the best ways to prepare for the process of getting your license. It’s also required if you’re under 18 years old. In Washington State, you can find driver education courses at local driving schools or online.

Get a Learner’s Permit

Once you’ve completed the driver education course, you can apply for a learner’s permit. To do so, you’ll need to take a written test at a local Department of Licensing office. You’ll also need to bring the following documents:

  • Proof of identity
  • Proof of residency
  • Proof of legal presence in the US
  • Proof of Social Security number

Once you pass the written test, you’ll be issued a learner’s permit. This permit allows you to drive with a licensed adult in the car.

Complete the Driving Requirements

With your learner’s permit in hand, you can start to practice driving. You must log at least 50 hours of supervised driving and 10 hours of night driving. You’ll also need to complete a Driver’s Education Certificate, which must be signed by your parent or legal guardian. This certificate is proof that you’ve completed the required supervised driving hours.

Take the Road Test

Once you’ve logged enough practice hours and have your Driver’s Education Certificate, you can take the road test. This test must be taken at a Department of Licensing office and must be scheduled in advance.

Get a Driver’s License

If you pass the road test, you’ll be issued a driver’s license. This license will be valid for six years, after which you’ll need to renew it.

Getting a driver’s license in Washington State is a big step, but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to be a difficult one. By following the steps outlined above, you can ensure you get your license in a safe and legal way.
